PMEL is located on NOAA's Western Regional Center about 30 minutes north of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, near the Ravenna and University District neighborhoods and the University Village Shopping Center. There is free bike and car parking on WRC. Federal identification and a local federal sponosor is required to access the WRC.

Driving Directions to PMEL Seattle from airport/downtown using I-5 North

  1. Follow airport signs to "Freeways North". Take Route 518 to I-5 North to Seattle.

  2. Exit I-5 at NE 45th Street, exit 169.

  3. Turn right onto NE 45th St. Follow NE 45th St. east through the University District and past the University Village. The street eventually winds north and becomes Sand Point Way NE. Pass Magnuson Park. The entrance to the NOAA Western Regional Center (WRC) is just north of the park.

  4. At the "NOAA Western Regional Center" sign, turn right onto the campus.

  5. Follow the signs to the guard shack. You will need to show a government issue ID to the guards. Parking is free.

Driving Directions to PMEL Seattle using I-5 South

  1. Exit I-5 South at exit 172 for NE 80th St

  2. Turn left onto NE80th St

  3. Turn right onto Banner Way NE. Banner Way NE becomes NE 75th St

  4. Turn right onto 40th Ave NE

  5. Turn left onto NE 70th St

  6. Turn left onto Sand Point Way NE. The entrance to the NOAA Western Regional Center (WRC) is just north of the park.

  7. At the "NOAA Western Regional Center" sign, turn right onto the campus.

  8. Follow the signs to the guard shack. You will need to show a government issue ID to the guards. Parking is free.

Using Public Transportation to PMEL Seattle

  1. King County Metro Bus Route 62 has direct access onto the campus and will drop off right in front of Building 3.

  2. Another bus route that has nearby stops is Route 75 (STOP: Sand Point Way NE and 77th St, near The Mountaineers).

  3. From the airport/downtown, take the Link rail light and get off at the University of Washington station. Then transfer to Route 75 for 17 stops and get off at Sand Point Way NE and NE 77th St. The entrance to NOAA will be a little front of you and down NOAA drive.

  5. Exact fare, Transit Go mobile tickets or ORCA cards are used for payments.

Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center is a research and teaching facility located in Newport, Ore., on the Yaquina Bay estuary, about one mile from the open waters of the Pacific Ocean. It plays an integral role in programs of marine and estuarine research and instruction, as a laboratory serving resident scientists, as a base for far-ranging oceanographic studies and as a classroom for students. Its campus includes research activities and facilities from six different state and federal agencies. It is about a 3 hour drive from Portland International Airport and a 2 hour drive from Eugene Airport.  

Directions to HMSC from Portland International Airport

Inland Route:
1. Take I-205 south (around the city of Portland) to I-5 south
2. Exit I-5 at Corvallis for Hwy 20, exit 228
3. Travel 55 miles west to Newport
4. Turn left on Hwy 101 and cross Yaquina Bay Bridge
5. Take right lane exit to OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center (campus map)

Coastal Route:
1. Take I-205 south to I-5 south
2. Exit for 99W through Tigard for Ocean Beaches
3. Connect to Hwy 18
4. Follow signs to Newport, Hwy 101
5. Cross Yaquina Bay Bridge
6. Take right lane exit to OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center

Directions from Eugene Airport

1. Take 99W (Pacific Coast Hwy) north to Corvallis
2. Exit Ocean Beaches, Hwy 20
3. Travel 55 miles went to Newport
4. Turn left onto Hwy 101 and travel over Yaquina Bay Bridge
5. Take right lane exit to OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center
