Underwater robotic gliders provide key tool to measure ocean sound levels

NOAA and Oregon State University researchers have developed an effective method to use an underwater robotic glider to measure sound levels over broad areas of the ocean, published today in the journal PLOS ONE.

Ocean gliders are a quiet and efficient mobile autonomous platform for passive acoustic monitoring and oceanographic measurements in remote marine environments. Researchers equipped a Teledyne Webb Research Slocum glider with a hydrophone to record sound along the US Pacific Northwest coast.
