contour data in cdf file

How to contour variable that is in cdf file? I have netcdf file 
created from ascii file that was formatted 5f9.2 with five
variables - lat, lon var1, var2, var3. I did a set name.cdf, but
when I run ferret to contour one of the variables,
I get this error message:

	dimensions improperly specified, can only specify
2 dimensions
