The problem you've encountered is actually a bug in Ferret. I ran into the
same problem a few months ago, and Steve Hankin at the time said it was a
bug that had been identified and should be fixed by the next Ferret
release.
Meanwhile, here's Steve's solution to displaying the 12th month for your
variable clim:
SHADE/L=12 clim[L=11:12]
This has worked for me in the past.
