I think the initial example would work with PLOT/VS (you omitted VS).
As written
> plot/overlay/symbol=20/color=blue lon[d=5],lat[d=5]
is trying to plot the two variables separately, which does not make sense (i.e. does not have a usable axis) on top of a map.
