Re: [ferret_users] rainbow.spk as a default color

Hmmm, there's a problem with the batlow.spk file. It has 256 levels but the limit in Ferret is 250 levels.

Hi,

In fact palettes like rainbow.spk are generally considered to be extremely poor for scientific purposes for a number of reasons including the generation of artifacts. For a starter on the subject I would encourage people to go Fabio Crameri's site.  http://www.fabiocrameri.ch/colourmaps.php

It appears that Patrick Brockman has created Ferret versions of the palettes there. If you download the colourmap file and " ls */*/*spk" youwill see entries like

ScientificColourMaps5/batlow/batlow.spk

This map in particular is a perceptually uniform rainbow palette and could well be a candidate for a new default.

Ansley, I think it would be well worth it to get these palettes into the distribution (with Patrick's and Fabio's permission, of course).

Cheers,

Russ

Thank you. The current ferret version has a default color provided by Patrick, instead of rainbow.
Why you guys replace the default color? The rainbow version is much better and more visible.

Hi,

In a Ferret session you can change your color palette by issuing the PALETTE command:

   PALETTE rainbow

which remains in effect until the end of the session or until another PALETTE command is issued.

To have this take effect for all of your PyFerret or Ferret sessions, put a PALETTE command into a .ferret startup file.

In fact  the means of setting the default color palette is that it is the file named "default.spk" in the directory where the color palette files reside. So if you don't share the Ferret installation with others who still may want the viridis to be the installed default, another method would be to make a copy of the palette you want as the default and name it "default.spk", and put that in a directory listed in the environment variable FER_PALETTE.

Hi Ferret_users,

I would like to get the "rainbow" ppt as my default colorbar.
Can anybody tell me how to do that?

Thanks
