The reference on map projections is available from the USGS web pages,
at
http://mac.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/factsheets/fs08799.html#1453. 
It looks as
if there is a link at the bottom of that web page for ordering publications.

The translation from the equations to the necessary Ferret expression is very
simple if one uses, say, the script for the Lambert Conformal Cylindrical
projection (mp_lambert_cyl.jnl)  as an example.
