For centuries, scientists and sailors have left records of the weather and environmental conditions they encountered on their travels in handwritten journals and logbooks. At the US National Archives, the original manuscripts are being converted into high-resolution photographs, which are posted on the Old Weather website where thousands of citizen volunteers are transcribing them into digital formats. The newly recovered information about environmental historical conditions is then included into modern, large-scale climate data sets, to improve our understanding of the weather and climate patterns of today.
